The polymer banknotes that feature the face of long-reigning predecessor Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be legal tender in the UK, and shall be co-circulated along with the King Charles III notes. People are free to exchange their existing Queen Elizabeth II banknotes for the newer Charles’ edition through the Bank of England.

The updated currency with King Charles’ portrait on them will be issued for the first time ever on June 5, 2024.
The polymer banknotes that feature the face of long-reigning predecessor Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be legal tender in the UK, and shall be co-circulated along with the King Charles III notes.
The upcoming banknotes will be printed solely to replace the already worn-out ones and to accommodate any general rise in demand for currency.

Images of these notes were initially revealed in December of 2022. King Charles’s portrait will be featured on the front of the banknotes, along with a cameo appearance in the transparent security window.
The current series of banknotes in circulation showcase Sir Winston Churchill on the £5, Jane Austen on the £10, JMW Turner on the £20 and Alan Turing on the £50.
People are free to exchange their existing Queen Elizabeth II banknotes for the newer Charles’ edition through the Bank of England, subject to certain restrictions, however. The Bank stated that further details about the process to do so will be shared later.
