Seven arrested in separate raids over fake currency notes

Seven suspects were arrested in two separate police operations on 25 April 2026 over the possession of counterfeit currency, with one raid also uncovering ‘Ice’.

In the first raid, officers from the Mount Lavinia Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted raids in the Ratmalana and Imbulgoda areas based on received information. Six suspects were taken into custody with 91 grams and 200 milligrams of ‘Ice’, along with two counterfeit Rs. 5,000 notes and 21 counterfeit Rs. 2,000 notes.

The suspects, aged 25, 29, 30, 32, 35 and 52, are residents of Imbulgoda, Dehipitiya, Pelenda and Ratmalana. They were handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police Station for further action.

In a separate operation on the same night, Kohuwala Police arrested a 56-year-old suspect in the Dehiwala area. The individual was found in possession of five counterfeit Rs. 5,000 notes and 38 counterfeit Rs. 2,000 notes. He is a resident of Wellawatte.

Further investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
