South Korea plans to use deposit tokens to pay operating expenses at government ministries and public institutions.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance said April 16 that a pilot project for treasury payments using blockchain-based digital currency had been selected as a 2026 planning-type regulatory sandbox project overseen by the Office for Government Policy Coordination, according to Newsis.

The regulatory sandbox designation makes it possible to use deposit tokens, instead of government purchasing cards, for operating-expense payments.
