Stockport’s brand new multi-million pound bus interchange to open this weekend

The brand new Stockport Interchange will operate from Sunday (March 17) following completion of the £135m project.

After the last timetabled bus services on Saturday, some existing nearby bus stops, including Heaton Lane bus station, will close and services will transfer to the new Interchange. Final touches are now being concluded and passengers will soon be able to see the new bus station for themselves.

The multi-million pound transport facility boasts 18 bus stands with the capacity for 164 departures an hour.

The new facility, which forms a central piece of the £1bn transformation of the town centre, will be accessible from entrances on Mersey Square, Swaine Street and Daw Bank, which will be clearly signposted. From March 18 there will also be access to the interchange from the new rooftop park via both lifts and stairs.

Chris Barnes, Head of Projects Group at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the first bus passengers to this modern, attractive and accessible new interchange.

“It’s a big moment for Stockport and Greater Manchester and we want everyone to make the most of the new facilities on offer right from the outset.

“New timetables and other important information are now available so people can make themselves familiar with the new arrangement ahead of Sunday – ensuring their first journey is a smooth and enjoyable one.”
