Teofimo Lopez Names His Favourite Fighter: “He’s Pound-For-Pound Number One”

Teofimo Lopez has accomplished a lot in the sport of boxing at the age of 26, including multiple world championships in two weight classes. He’s all about legacy, and appreciates other fighters who have the same goal.

Following an upset win over Vasily Lomachenko to become unified champion at lightweight, ‘The Takeover’s career hit a downslope in the form of a shock loss to George Kambosos Jr.

He would move up to 140lbs and, after a couple of average showings, beat formerly undisputed and undefeated Josh Taylor to become champion in the second class.

Another man who has been conquering divisions is Naoya Inoue – the man Lopez regards as his favourite fighter and the best on the planet.

At the Boxing Writers Association of America Awards, the two-weight undisputed champion was presented with the Fighter of the Year honour. Lopez was seated next to Inoue and, speaking to the Ring Magazine at the ceremony, praised his style and his drive.

“He’s number one pound-for-pound in the world and my favourite fighter honestly of this era. It’s just great to be in his presence, all celebrating his accomplishments. Why [is he my favourite fighter? Why not! Have you seen the way he fights?

The guy knows every style in every way. Just the fact that he’s been able to do it back to back in such a short period of time, that just shows how great this guy is aiming to be. I respect fighters like that. I admire fighters that are aiming to be greater than great. That’s what it’s all about – legacy. And I can’t wait to see how much more he can do.”

Teo discussed what it was like to be in the presence of what he sees as the greatest fighter of a generation.

“He’s a monster for real, man. You can tell he’s got fire in him. Someone that doesn’t play any type of games when it comes to it. The humility that he brings to the sport, and to have that moment of enjoying each other, that means a lot.”

Although economical with his matchmaking and scheduling, Naoya Inoue is yet to announce his next opponent. Reports suggest he could be travelling to London for the first time in his career.

Lopez is next out defending his WBO belt against Steve Claggett on June 29.
