I’m pretty sure we’ve all reached a point where anything involving rent, property or real estate in Cape Town makes us naar.
Another Sea Point property has been sold for a price that has the comment section and, quite frankly, the rest of us scratching our heads.
Now, before anyone comes for me, I’m not here to judge someone’s home choices. If you love minimalist interiors, grey walls and a space that looks like it was designed by someone who was afraid of adding a splash of colour, then live your best life.
But R9 million? Nine million rand? For this? The property was described as a “4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home”, and the listing celebrated the sale, saying: “A great result and another happy chapter starting for the new owners.”
And yes, before someone says, “They are paying for the views”, let’s have a conversation. Apartment blocks painted in various shades of white and grey are not exactly what most people imagine when they hear the word “views”.
That is not a panoramic Cape Town moment. That is looking directly into your neighbour’s window and hoping they remember to close the curtains.
The interior itself doesn’t exactly scream R9 million either. There’s no jaw-dropping design feature, no “wow, I would sell my kidney for this kitchen” moment and no feeling that you’ve walked into a luxury dream home.
Naturally, the comments section was lit with opinions that we can all agree on.
One person wrote: “😂😂 This reel can’t be real? F*** only a foreigner will pay 9mil for that crackpot fixer-upper 😬 and this is why a South African can’t afford housing in CT 👏🏻👏🏻 extortion!!”
And while we don’t know who bought the property, the comment touches on a much bigger conversation happening in Cape Town.
The city’s property market has become increasingly attractive to international buyers, with some foreign investors purchasing homes due to the exchange rate, lifestyle appeal and Cape Town’s global reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
But for many locals, especially first-time buyers, watching properties reach these prices can feel like watching a game you were never invited to play.
Another commenter wrote: “That price would get you something 3x better in the middle of Houghton in JHB. What are you guys thinking down there?!”
It also brings up the never-ending Cape Town versus Johannesburg property debate. While Cape Town offers the ocean, mountains and lifestyle appeal, many buyers argue that Johannesburg property prices often offer more space for the same budget.
And then there was: “Buyers paid 9 million for four walls. Whole place needs to be gutted. Cape Town real estate is a joke.”
Yikes.
What can we say? We live in a world where a home can cost millions, yet many of us are still trying to figure out how we’re supposed to afford a deposit, never mind the actual house.
The reality is, some of us might never own a home in the place we grew up calling home, which is a tough pill to swallow, especially when you’re looking at an R9 million house and still wondering if the actual house is arriving in part two.
