Unprofitable Chinese real estate firms have seen their share prices surge after moving into the semiconductor sector, prompting analysts to question whether the trend represents a safe investment or a gamble on a future government rescue, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.
Embattled property developers are adopting a new strategy to revive their struggling businesses by diversifying into chip production. Several listed companies have experienced share price increases of hundreds of percent following announcements of investments in chipmaking. This wave of diversification has triggered a buying frenzy among retail investors in mainland China’s A-share market.
Ding Haifeng, a consultant at Shanghai-based financial-advisory firm Integrity, described chip-themed stocks as the new favorites of individual investors because such stocks play a key role in China’s technological innovation and carry national hopes. He added that the excitement surrounding these companies serves as a stark reminder that mainland exchanges could become a speculators’ market if company fundamentals are overlooked.
Beijing-based developer Metro Land saw its Shanghai-traded shares hit the 10 percent daily limit to reach 20.85 yuan on May 13 after it officially announced a plan to buy a 20 percent stake in Xian Qixin Optoelectronics Technology, a firm that uses laser signals to produce advanced chips. Based on that closing price, the shares of the unprofitable company had risen 389 percent from the end of 2025. The stock has since dropped 23.5 percent to 15.96 yuan after the Shanghai Stock Exchange issued an inquiry letter demanding that Metro Land clarify details about the deal and disclose its financial condition.
Metro Land reported a net loss of 1.2 billion yuan last year, a deficit that widened 15.3 percent from 2024.
