Southend play areas to get £1m investment after complaints

Residents have taken to social media since the summer holidays started two weeks ago to complain about broken equipment, particularly at the playground in Chalkwell Park.

Following a consultation earlier this year, Southend Council has confirmed major improvements will be carried out at Priory Park, Southchurch Park, Chalkwell Park, Bournes Green Park, Belfairs Park, Oakwood Park, and Friars Park.

These refurbishments, funded through a £1million investment from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), are set to start this autumn.

Lydia Hyde, Labour councillor responsible for climate, environment, and waste, said: “I am passionate about this issue, and in 2022, I proposed a ‘Better Play’ motion to the council to improve play areas for our young citizens.

“I am now pleased to be in a position to work with officers to deliver on these ambitions.”

Two pieces of play equipment remain out of action at Chalkwell Park as the council waits on replacement parts.

Ms Hyde added: “Currently, two pieces of play equipment are out of service at the London Road playground in Chalkwell Park.

“The slide unit has been decommissioned, and replacement parts are on order.

“Additionally, we are repairing the ‘hip-hop’ unit by rebuilding its worn bearing.”

James Courtney, Conservative councillor in the Chalkwell ward, uses the playgrounds with his young son.

He added: “I totally understand the frustrations that half the equipment is bust. I do have sympathy for parents, especially as a slide is a key part of a park.

“It is by far not the best time either with the holidays, so I hope the council can speed up the repairs, before everyone goes back to school.

“But it is really good that the toddler park in Chalkwell will get a refresh as it is tired and old. That is definitely needed and is welcomed.”
