Tech View: Nifty awaiting decisive breakout above 22,200. What traders should do on Tuesday

Nifty today ended 82 points higher at fresh peaks to form an Ascending Triangle pattern on the daily chart. Nifty has surpassed the swing high on the hourly chart, signaling an increase in optimism. The momentum indicator RSI is also suggesting a positive shift in momentum.

The near-term trend of Nifty remains positive. But the market is displaying lack of strength to witness a decisive upside breakout of the resistance around 22150-22200 levels. Further consolidation or minor dip can’t be ruled out in the coming sessions. Immediate support is at 21950 levels, said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities.

Open Interest (OI) data showed the call side displayed the highest OI at 22,500, followed by the 22,600 strike prices. On the put side, the maximum OI was observed at the 22,000 strike price.

On the global front, the US FED will unveil its latest minutes this week, which may hint at the direction of rates; however, the higher US 10 yr yield and domestic outflows of FIIs are pointing cautiousness of foreign investors.

As the markets entered into a fresh week, Asian Shares were mostly higher after Chinese markets reopened Monday from a Lunar New Year holiday. At the opening bell, major Indian indices traded on a higher note where Sensex was up 200.96 points and Nifty was up 33.15 points. Equity benchmark indices gained strength as trade progressed on Monday and the Nifty index leaped to a fresh high of 22,150 after jumping 100 points. The BSE Sensex rose 300 points to an intra-day high of 72,729. However, markets will remain closed Monday in the United States for President’s Day.

Tolins Tyres files draft papers to garner Rs 230-cr via IPO

Tolins Tyres Ltd has filed preliminary papers with capital markets regulator Sebi to raise Rs 230 crore through an initial public offering (IPO). The Kerala-based company’s initial share-sale is a combination of fresh issue of equity shares worth Rs 200 crore and an offer-for-sale (OFS) of equity shares to the tune of Rs 30 crore, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) filed on Friday.

Temenos shares rise for first time since Hindenburg hit

Shares in Swiss software company Temenos rose over 6% in early trading on Monday, notching up their first gains since the stock was battered by a report from Hindenburg Research last week alleging accounting irregularities.
Temenos shares had lost around one third of their value since hitting a year-high of nearly 90 Swiss francs earlier this month. By 0925 GMT, the stock was up by 6.25% at 64.40 francs, the first increase since the Hindenburg report on Thursday.

Spain’s Santander to buy back $1.57 billion in shares, raise dividend

Spain’s Santander announced a new share buyback programme of $1.57 billion on Monday and said it would raise its 2023 dividend per share by some 50%.

The euro zone’s second-biggest bank by market value said the execution of its buyback would start on Tuesday after having already obtained the necessary regulatory authorization.

South Korean shares rose more than 1% on Monday to their highest level since May 2022, as chipmakers jumped and foreign buying continued on optimism around the government’s corporate reform plan. The benchmark KOSPI closed up 31.50 points, or 1.19%, at 2,680.26 – its highest level since May 31, 2022.

BYJU’S rights issue gets $300 million commitment

Edtech major Think and Learn, which operates under BYJU’S brand name, is learnt to have received a commitment of $300 million from investors for its ongoing rights issue which will close by the end of February, sources aware of the development said. BYJU’S floated a rights issue in January to raise $200 million at an enterprise valuation in the range of $220-250 million which is a 99% reduction in its peak valuation of $22 billion.

Oil down in thin trade as US gears up for Presidents’ Day

Oil prices edged down on Monday morning as markets digested comments from US Federal Reserve officials pointing to a more patient stance regarding potential interest rate cuts, in thin early trade on what is a public holiday in the United States.

Brent crude futures were down 58 cents, or 0.69%, at $82.89 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was 35 cents, or 0.44%, lower at $78.84 at 0138 GMT.

PSU banks are outperforming private sector banks due to low valuations which continue to be fair even after the run up in prices.

Investors should be careful while chasing many mid and small caps which are rising sharply without fundamental justification. Many of these stocks have very low floating stock and, therefore, can easily be manipulated by a cartel of operators. In the long run only stocks with strong fundamentals will give steady and good returns.
