Maldives ECPI July 2026: Food Prices Drop 1.81% MoM, Rise 5.89% YoY – News and Statistics

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics released its Essential Commodities Price Index (ECPI) for July 2026 on August 8, 2026, according to the official statistics release. The overall ECPI for Male’ stood at 120.37 in July, reflecting a month-on-month decline of 1.27% from June 2026, while the year-on-year rate rose by 6.07% compared to July 2025.

Food prices decline monthly but rise annually

Food prices in Male’ fell by 1.81% month-on-month, driven by notable drops in vegetables (-10.89%) and fruits (-1.42%). These declines were partially offset by increases in milk, other dairy products and eggs (+0.95%) and oils and fats (+0.74%). On a year-on-year basis, food prices increased by 5.89%, with the most significant rises in meat (+21.43%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+10.73%), milk and dairy products (+9.48%), and oils and fats (+9.26%).

Beverages, fuel, and personal care trends

Beverages prices rose by 0.35% month-on-month, with notable increases in fruit and vegetable juices (+2.39%) and coffee and coffee substitutes (+0.30%). Year-on-year, beverages increased by 5.75%, led by coffee and coffee substitutes (+20.20%) and fruit and vegetable juices (+5.89%). The gas and other fuel group remained unchanged month-on-month but rose by 14.54% year-on-year. Personal care products increased by 0.07% monthly and 2.87% annually.

Index methodology and upcoming releases

The ECPI is a weighted average price index covering a basket of 96 essential commodities, with 2,549 price quotations collected monthly. Food carries a weight of 70.94%, beverages 14.20%, personal care products 8.43%, and gas and other fuel 6.43%. The index serves as a sub-index of the Consumer Price Index and is intended for price regulation and as an early warning system for inflation of essential commodities. The next monthly releases are scheduled for September 9, October 8, and November 5, 2026.
